At least 14 people, including policemen, Tatmadaw (military) soldiers and civilians were killed in the attack on the Defence Services Technological Academy in Pyin Oo Lwin township, Mandalay Region, and Gote Twin Bridge near Nawngcho township, Shan State, said rescue workers.
At about 5:30am on Thursday, a drug inspection checkpoint and the academy were attacked with heavy weapons, killing one person and injuring another, said U Aung Min, regional MP for Pyin Oo Lwin Constituency 1.
“As the academy is a military facility, we didn’t enter. But we heard that an artillery shell hit the superintendent’s house. A nearby soldier was injured. Another shell hit the parade ground, killing a civilian,” he said.
The rockets had been fired from the hills east of the academy, and the military posted guards in those areas.
An attack at the Gote Twin Bridge in Nawngcho resulted in causalities, and the bridge, which is about 15 metres long, was closed to traffic. There were about 12 deaths including police and military personnel that we know of, said U Than Zaw of the Cherry Heart Blood Donation Group, who was part of the rescue operation.
“All the dead people were male, including a driver. The rest were police and Tatmadaw. Gote Twin Bridge is closed because the lower part is tilting. Buildings and cars were also destroyed,” he said.
Anti-narcotics police camps at the toll gate near the bridge were also attacked and three people were killed, according to the rescue workers.
