Myanmar bags bronze medal in SEA Games
Myanmar’s SEA Games football team on Tuesday bagged the bronze medal in the 30th Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines after beating Cambodia in a penalty shootout.
The match was held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
Myanmar’s starting lineup comprised Sann Sat Naing as goalkeeper, Win Moe Kyaw, Soe Moe Kyaw, Ye Yint Aung, Aung Wunna Soe in defence, Ye Min Thu, Nay Moe Aung, Lwin Moe Aung, Myat Kaung Khant in midfield and Aung Kaung Mann as striker.
The Cambodians challenged Myanmar throughout the match as they were playing for the country’s first medal in football at the SEA Games and showed an impressive performance especially in the opening minutes of the game.
Cambodia took the lead with a first-minute goal, the fastest goal scored in this year’s games.
However, Aung Kaung Mann steadied the nerves of the Myanmar team by scoring an equaliser in the seventh minute, tying the score at 1-1.
Myat Kaung Khant broke the tie with a goal off a freekick, pushing the Myanmar team ahead.
In second half, the plucky Cambodians scored an equaliser from a freekick leaving both teams at 2-2 at the end of regulation time.
During the penalty shootout to break the tie, Myanmar’s players scored all their penalty shots while Cambodia managed only four as the team captain Keo Sokpheng missed the final penalty.
The win means both the Myanmar men’s and women’s teams are coming home with the bronze medals.
